Clearing things up
Now I have noticed that even though Fire Emblem fates is almost 10 years old there are still some people who have yet to realize Valla was inspired by Greece, so as I decided to help by making this blog post.
The first and most obvious is the names of the people from Valla such as Arate the mother of Azura and Homonoia the mother of Corrin both characters are named after a pair of sisters goddess from Greek mythology
Statue of the Goddess Arate
Arate and Homonoia from Fire Emblem fates
We also have Anankos Theosdrakon who in came is called the god of wisdom and more importantly Fate and I say more importantly in this case because his name is a masculine version of the Greek goddess Ananke was considered the personification of Fate in Greek mythology
Goddess Ananke
Then you have more obscure characters like Cadros the first king of Valla who’s relationship with Anankos is inspired by the relationship between Abraham and God in the book of genesis
Click the link if you want to know more about that and fates many other biblical inspirations, but for now let’s get back on track.
Earlier when I mentioned Anankos I did say everything about his title Theosdrakon well it’s Greek for god dragon and it’s a title he shares with his sister Nohra and brother Moro who same might receive as the rainbow sage.
To start the vallites are lead by a priest-king who all come from the line of Codros and rule in a similar manner to the Mycenaean Wanax or priest-king, the Mycenaeans are what we call the Greeks of the late Bronze Age. This Greek influence is shown in the clothing worn by the people of Valla as well.
As well as much of their architecture bearing a strong resemblance to Greek architecture like the castle Gyges
Gyges
Now while Gyges does look quite different from Knossos both structures are massive complexes designed with vast storage space in order to store everything from food and water to weapons of all sorts. That being said most weapons made in Valla were primarily ceremonial and this is where I got to the most important influence.
If you wanted to create a ruined civilization then what tale to draw from then Atlantis.
I assume I shouldn’t have to explain the fall of Atlantis to you, a powerful island nation blessed by a god only to end up destroyed we the people forsake that god this story as been told and retold from centuries and Valla is just one more in a long line of fantasy nations to mirror this ancient tale.
To explain the fate of Valla for those who haven’t played Fire Emblem fates yet Valla was an ancient kingdom which once was located in middle of a vast mountain range sandwich between Nohr to the west and Hoshido to the east . Then one a great conflict erupted between the king in the west called Kaiser and the queen in the east named Mikoto, and was for this reason that Anankos chose the completely separate the kingdom of Valla from the world placing it in its own realm set apart from the rest of existence. This act left a massive hole called the bottomless canyon that stretches across the entire world dividing the world between Nohr and Hoshido.
Now free from war the Humans of Valla become complacent and eventually forget about Anankos and much like both Atlantis and ancient Israel it was the complacency that caused the complete destruction of Valla.
Now you say that’s all well and good but what does Atlantis have to do with Greece? Well my friend those it’s true Atlantis isn’t treated as Greek most of the time the myth of Atlantis is Greek. More over the tale of Atlantis is believed to have its origins with the ancient Minoans.
The Minoans for those who don’t know was the first Greek civilization the is believed to have its origins on the island of Crete in the early Bronze Age.
I’ll leave it at that for now but if you still want to see what else in Valla is Greek I recommend this Video made by a guy called KitsuneHawk it’s pretty informative.
That’s it for now have a good day my friend.
